RHS Malvern Spring Festival 2026 Feature Garden

Clay - The ‘Super Soil’

A contemporary RHS show garden exploring the power and potential of clay soil

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE RHS GARDEN DESIGN

The RHS Malvern Spring Festival 2026 marked the start of the RHS garden shows 2026 calendar and set the tone for the season ahead. As one of the first RHS garden shows of the year, the RHS Malvern Show is known for celebrating horticultural innovation, craftsmanship and thoughtful design.

This feature garden, designed by Martyn Wilson of Wilson Associates Garden Design, focused on clay soil, often overlooked but rich in potential. Clay accounts for around 25% of British soils and is especially prevalent across Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and the wider Three Counties region.

Rather than seeing clay as a limitation, this RHS Malvern show garden demonstrated how it can be harnessed and enhanced to create resilient, beautiful and productive planting schemes.

CLAY – THE ‘SUPER SOIL

Nobody ever said gardening would be easy, and working with clay soil is one of the many challenges gardeners can face.

Yet clay surrounds us in more ways than we realise. From the bricks our homes are built with, to the tiles on our roofs, the pots we plant into and even the mug we drink that much-needed tea or coffee from, clay is part of everyday life. It felt only right that this RHS Malvern show garden placed it centre stage.

RHS Malvern Spring Festival was held in Worcestershire, a county long renowned for fruit and vegetable growing, alongside neighbouring Gloucestershire and Herefordshire. Much of that productivity is rooted in fertile clay soils, which hold nutrients exceptionally well and, when managed correctly, support a wide range of plant species.

The garden brought this idea to life within a contemporary design that quietly referenced traditional artisan craft. A timber-framed structure, created using locally sourced timber from Herefordshire, was clad in clay tiles manufactured in the West Midlands by a 200-year-old family-run business, using soils sourced in Staffordshire.

Those same clay materials reappeared in feature walls that sat amongst the planting, helping to shelter the space alongside native hedging suited to heavier soils.

Whilst the material palette reflected the heritage of the region, the layout demonstrated practical, forward-thinking approaches to working with clay. Accessible pathways formed from self-binding gravel guided visitors towards brick paver terraces sourced from the West Midlands, before winding past a series of raised timber beds. Within these beds, visible soil ‘horizons’ offered insight into different methods of improvement, from traditional mulching to No Dig and Cut and Drop techniques, showing how dense clay can be transformed into a productive growing medium.

Trees, shrubs and perennials were carefully selected for their suitability to clay-rich conditions, creating a layered planting scheme that balanced structure and seasonal interest. An orchard area underplanted with wildflower turf provided a place to pause and enjoy the garden, whilst reinforcing the long-standing fruit-growing heritage of the Three Counties.

Clay pots, created by artisans in England and sourced through a Herefordshire supplier, provided further opportunities for planting displays. These offered flexibility for those who preferred to work above ground, whilst still celebrating the material at the heart of the design.

Anchoring the space was a striking sculpture by renowned artist Simon Gudgeon. Inspired by the fruit-growing history of the region, it introduced a focal point that connected soil, craft and landscape in one cohesive narrative.

Following the festival, the garden was carefully relocated to Worcestershire Royal Hospital, where it has been reimagined as a permanent green space supporting the wellbeing of staff, patients and visitors.

PLANTING FOR CLAY SOIL

PROUD TO FEATURE AT THE RHS MALVERN SPRING FESTIVAL 2026

The Clay ‘Super Soil’ feature garden featured at the RHS Malvern Spring Festival 2026, which took place from 7th to 10th May 2026 at the Three Counties Showground in Malvern, Worcestershire.

As one of the headline gardens at the RHS Malvern Show, the design sits alongside the first RHS-judged outdoor show gardens of the year, the Festival of Houseplants, Blooming Borders and Floral Tablescaping. The RHS Spring Garden Show in Malvern traditionally opens the RHS garden shows 2026 calendar and is widely regarded as the first major RHS garden event of the season.

As an established RHS garden designer, Martyn Wilson’s involvement at RHS Malvern continues a long-standing relationship with the show, where his previous medal-winning gardens have been recognised by judges.
